This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but inside Together lies a profound meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
