Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
