In a stunning development, one of the leading contenders in the Irish presidential election has quit the campaign, dramatically altering the political landscape.
The party's Jim Gavin stepped down on the evening of Sunday following disclosures about an outstanding payment to a past renter, transforming the race into an volatile two-horse race between a centre-right former government minister and an independent leftwing legislator.
The 54-year-old Gavin, a political novice who was parachuted into the campaign after work in athletics, flying and armed forces, withdrew after it came to light he had not repaid a overpaid rent of over three thousand euros when he was a lessor about in the mid-2000s, during a period of monetary strain.
"It was my fault that was inconsistent with my values and the expectations I hold. Corrective actions are underway," he said. "After careful consideration, concerning the influence of the continuing election battle on the wellbeing of my loved ones and companions.
"After evaluating everything, I have decided to withdraw from the campaign for president with immediate effect and go back to my family."
The biggest shock in a presidential campaign in recent history limited the options to Heather Humphreys, a former cabinet minister who is running for the ruling centre-right political party Fine Gael, and Catherine Connolly, an frank supporter of Palestinian rights who is backed by a political party and small leftwing opposition parties.
The withdrawal also created turmoil for the prime minister and party head, Micheál Martin, who had staked his authority by selecting an inexperienced hopeful over the reservations of party colleagues.
He commented it was about not wanting to "create turmoil" to the presidential role and was right to withdraw. "He acknowledged that he committed a mistake in relation to an matter that has come up lately."
Even with a track record of capability and achievements in commerce and athletics – under his leadership the capital's GAA team to five consecutive championship victories – his political bid struggled through gaffes that left him trailing in an public opinion measure even before the unpaid debt disclosure.
Individuals within Fianna Fáil who had objected to picking the candidate said the episode was a "significant mistake" that would have "ramifications" – a thinly veiled warning to Martin.
The candidate's name may remain on the ballot in the vote scheduled for October 24, which will end the 14-year tenure of the current president, but people must choose between a two options between a centrist establishment candidate and an non-aligned left-leaning candidate. A poll taken before his departure gave Connolly a third of the vote and Humphreys nearly a quarter, with the former candidate at 15 percent.
Under electoral rules, the electorate chooses hopefuls by ranked choice. Should no contender surpass half the votes initially, the candidate with the least first preference votes is eliminated and their votes are transferred to the next preference.
It was expected that should Gavin be removed, a majority of his ballots would go to Humphreys, and conversely, increasing the likelihood that a pro-government candidate would attain the presidency for the Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael coalition.
This office is a largely symbolic post but the current and former presidents turned it into a stage for international matters.
The 68-year-old Connolly, from her home city, would introduce a robust progressive perspective to that heritage. She has criticized free-market policies and stated the group represents "an integral component" of the people of Palestine. Connolly has alleged the alliance of warmongering and likened Berlin's enhanced defense expenditure to the thirties, when Germany underwent rearmament.
Humphreys, 62, has encountered examination over her record as a minister in administrations that managed a housing crisis. Being a member of that faith from the northern county, she has also been questioned about her inability to speak Irish but stated her religious background could aid in securing unionist community in a combined country.
