Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in federal court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
