RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several entry passages down to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," he commented. "Including them were numerous British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
