Chantelle Cameron voluntarily gave up her world championship belt on recently as an act of defiance against the status quo in female boxing, calling for the opportunity to fight in extended rounds similar to men fighters.
Cameron’s decision to vacate her world title originates from her strong opposition with the World Boxing Council’s requirement that women boxers participate in two-minute rounds, which the experienced fighter regards as gender disparity.
“Female boxing has made great strides, but there’s still room for improvement,” the boxer declared. “I’ve always believed in fairness and that includes the choice to have identical rules, equal opportunities, and equal respect.”
The British boxer was elevated to WBC super-lightweight world champion when Katie Taylor was named “temporary champion” as she paused from the sport. The WBC was set to have a purse bid on that day for a bout between Cameron and fellow British boxer the challenger.
In December 2023, another female fighter similarly gave up her championship after the council would not authorize her to participate in fights under the identical regulations as fighters’ boxing, with 12 three-minute rounds.
The WBC president, the president, had mentioned previously that they would not sanction 12 three-minute rounds in women’s boxing. “For tennis female players compete three sets, for basketball the hoop is lower and the ball smaller and those are non-contact activities. We prioritize the welfare of the fighters,” he wrote on his platform.
Typically women’s championship matches have ten rounds of shorter duration each, and the British boxer was one of numerous athletes – including Serrano – who initiated an effort in recently to have the right to compete under the same rules as male boxers.
Cameron, who maintains a impressive fight record, made clear that her demonstration is more than her own wishes, framing it as a battle for the next wave of women fighters. “It’s an honor of my accomplishment in earning a title holder, but it’s right to protest for what’s right and for the future of the sport,” she added.
The fighter is not leaving from boxing altogether, however, with her promoters her promotion company indicating she intends to seek other championship opportunities and prestigious matches while persisting in her requirement on fighting in longer duration fights.
